"With law shall land be built". The iconic words open the Jutlandic Law and are still used as an ideal for the construction of a society. But the Jutlandic Law does not contain modern ideals of society. On the contrary. The law saw the light of day at a time when great political changes were underway and the country was going from stability to chaos. Perhaps the words and the narrative of the law were a party to the dispute. The Jutlandic Law shows a society with great social differences and where large parts of the population were subject to the will of the landlord. Crimes could be paid for and the accused could swear themselves free if others would give them a good shooting.Helle Vogt, professor of legal history at the University of Copenhagen, takes us through the content of the Jutlandic Law and the construction of society and follows the history of the law up to today, when it has become part of the struggle for values.
